Where to Plant

Collards can be grown in all zones throughout California. They will thrive in full sun or partial shade and can be grown in containers.

How to Plant

Sow seeds in groups of two to three seeds about 18 inches apart and cover with ¼ inch of soil. Keep evenly moist. Seeds may take up to two weeks to germinate. Seedlings started indoors can be transplanted outdoors when they are 3 to 4 inches tall and there is no danger of frost.

Care and Maintenance

As the plants grow, thin to just one seedling from each group. Mulch around the plants and keep the area weeded so they’ll have room to spread out in a loose rosette form.
